The Campaign for Working Families Offers Free Tax Preparation

The Campaign for Working Families boost the number of people who receive free tax filing assistance and do not have to pay sky-high fees to commercial tax preparers. Over the past eight years, The Campaign for Working families has brought $146.4 million into the homes of low-income working families. And saved these families an estimated $20.2 million in interest, fees and charges for tax preparation

Public Hearing 12/17: All Out to Support Workers Comp for Taxi Drivers

In August, 2009 State Representative Mark Cohen introduced House Bill 1914. This legislation is seeking to provide workers compensation for taxi drivers. The Bill is currently in the Urban Affairs Committee.

The next step of the process will be a public hearing scheduled for December 17th 2009 at 10 am in the Convention Center, room 108. We are asking all Unified Taxi Workers Alliance (UTWA) members, members of our network, allies and friends to attend this hearing as we continue our fight for economic justice.

Injustice in Housing is a Life or Death Matter

Several weeks ago Jill Porter of the Philadelphia Daily News reported on the death of a man named Roy Parker, a tenant in an illegal boarding house behind the shuttered Ivy Ridge Assisted Living facility in Roxborough. Parker and 9 other low-income residents had been renting 7 rooms at the property, at $450 each, in an effort to rebuild their lives after struggling with poverty, health, and in Parker' case, even homelessness.
