The founder of Odunde, Ms. Lois Fernandez, once told me about the time she fought the city and saved Madison Square (one of South Central' garden blocks) from being cemented over—decades before ninety-nine percent of the developers I met this summer paid any attention to the area they’re now so excited about. And the descendants of Ms. Lois (both actual and metaphorical) continue to fight for the rights of current and long-time residents in their neighborhoods (http://www.allforthetaking.org/?p=165).
