VIDEO: Rosemary Cubas on the Neighborhood Transformation Initiative
This is another archival clip from November 6, 2003 from a forum called "Revitalization or Gentrification?" hosted by Bread and Roses Community Fund in Philadelphia. In this clip, Rosemary Cubas (Community Leadership Institute) explains how the Mayor's controversial Neighborhood Transformation Initiative (NTI) has effected people in her community in North Philadelphia, as well as other parts of the city. This archival footage documents some of the thinking and organizing Rosemary was doing around this issue. Her passing earlier this year was a tremendous loss--it is an honor to be able to post her likeness here and to be able to share her words. Since the clip is 22 minutes long this was compressed with a lower image quality to make downloading faster.Click the image or link below to play. [Thanks to George McCollough for retrieving the footage.]

This clip was inspiring to
This clip was inspiring to say the least. I think it is really striking to hear the two different perspectives of Rosemary and Jeremy Novak: one with a human perspective and one with a marketing perspective.
If "revitalization" was really about creating healthy. livable communities, then there would be no such thing as "collateral damage" of displaced people. These clips make it very clear that there are alterior motives behind "revitalization" and we should not be fooled into thinking that "revitalization" is anything more than a code word for "rich people in, poor people out".
I am really sorry I didn't get to know Rosemary better before she passed away. I was moved by her stories, and I know she has left a long legacy of activism in the Philadelphia community.
