Foxwoods fails to open in time: Casino Coalition heads to Harrisburg to close them for good
This Friday the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board will vote whether or not to extend the license needed for Foxwoods casinos to open one of the two proposed slots parlors in city limits. Members of Asian Americans United, Casino Free Philadelphia and other in the No Casino in the Heart of Our City Coalition will head to Harrisburg to deliver the message in person to the Gaming Control Board to say no to the extension for Foxwoods.
Foxwoods was expected by the Board to begin operating a 1,500 machine slot parlor, which they have thus far failed to do and have requested more time. They also would like to relocate the project from the waterfront in South Philly on Columbus Boulevard to the old Strawbridge & Clothier building on 8th and Market, a move that has yet to be approved by the Gaming Control Board.
One of the clear reasons for the delay has been the opposition to the project by surrounding neighbors affected by the project. The No Casino in the Heart of Our City Coalition has lead in identifying the problems of a casino for all residents of Philly. The industry is predatory with practices like ATMs on slot floors, is currently in economic trouble, has deep economic costs for all residents, and there is a need for other proposals to sustainably develop the city.
If you are interested in joining the Coalition as it tells the Gaming Control Board to not extend the license for Foxwoods and gain a major victory in the fight against predatory gambling in the city they are leaving Friday morning at 7pm. You can RSVP here.
