People across the country are in the midst of a debate about the best path to fixing our broken health care system and getting quality healthcare to the un/underinsured. While attention is focused at the state and federal levels, the city of Philadelphia is about to lose another vital institution that serves the healthcare needs of poor and working class Philadelphians--Northeastern Hospital. This city-wide struggle to save Northeasterngoes hand-in-hand with the national fight. Keeping Northeastern Hospital open and fixing our country' healthcare system are two sides of the same coin. While in Baltimore, members of Labor Justice Radio spoke to Maria Alwine of the Maryland Coalition for Baltimore Gas and Electric Reregulation. In this interview, Alwine explains that since deregulation, gas and electric fees have more than doubled and currently 84,000 Baltimore households are slated to have utilities shut-off. Alwine also discusses the organizing people are doing to get Baltimore Gas & Electric re-regulated.

As the casino industry tries to push it's way into the heart of Philadelphia, communities are pushing back. In this piece, we hear highlights from a community forum hosted by the No Casino in the Heart of the City Coalition, with speakers from Asian Americans United & Casino Free Philadelphia. The speakers shed light on the predatory tactics used by the casino industry and explain some of the ways that casinos encourage gambling addiction and target those who can least afford to lose.

After last week's phony hearings by our state and local
governments, we are now moving full steam ahead to Beat the House. In
only 26 days and counting Philadelphia will come together to Beat the
House by entering a local casino to demonstrate the predatory nature of
the gambling industry through smart, strategic actions. And we need you
to make it a huge success. Sign up to volunteer now!

On Saturday, roughly 100 people demonstrated in Center City against Temple University' profit-motivated plans to close Northeastern Hospital. Last year, Northeastern Hospital treated roughly 50,000 people in its emergency room and delivered 1,800 babies, serving the predominately low-income neighborhoods of Port Richmond, Fishtown, Bridesburg, Juniata Park, Kensington and Narrowgate. Too many Medicaid patients, too many uninsured,a nurse said at yesterday' protest.

Tomorrow the communities fighting to save Northeastern Hospital will converge on a Temple University fundraiser. Temple University Health System announced March 23rd that they will close Northeastern--a busy hospital that serves Port Richmond, Fishtown, Kensington, Juniata and Bridesburg--at the end of May. For months, State Senator Stack and Representative Taylor asked them to work with government for a solution; Temple adamantly declined. Tomorrow, we all have a chance to support this struggle for the health of our city.

The No Casino in the Heart of the City Coalition sent out this letter today. Sugar House is presenting today to the Gaming Control Board (this time they are not walking out the back door). Also the 11th and Market relocation of Foxwoods is on the agenda for tomorow at City Council, but the coalition will not, "subject our people to the indignity of testifying before governmental bodies who have no apparent interest in what we are saying"
