Municipal Meltdown in Harrisburg
Real News Network, an independent media group providing original in depth journalism, just released a look at the capital of Pennsylvania and the municipal debt crisis that is grinding the city's government to a halt.
Municipal debt issues are nothing new. Since the recession starting in 2008 budget issues have plagued many state, city and county governments, often leading to drastic cuts in social services and public works and balancing the budget on through regressive taxes on working people.
Here we see the situation up close in Harrisburg, as decades of mismanagement and the continued economic downturn with the city proposing taxing home-owners, cutting fire service, and taking on more debt as the answer to the problem.
