Nutter Leaving People with AIDS Homeless for the Holidays
Across Philadelphia over 8,000 are people living with HIV/AIDS and without adequate housing. Living homeless through the winter while struggling with a sickness that weakens the immune system, these individuals face a crisis of healthcare, housing, and poverty.
ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) Philadelphia, along with Proyecto Sol Philadelphia are demanding that Mayor Nutter fund the creation of housing for people living with HIV/AIDS. What little housing is currently available through federal programs comes far from meeting the existing need. There are currently 165 individuals and families who have spent over two years on a waiting list for federally subsidized housing. There is no good reason for this wait, considering that this past year alone the City received $7.2 million in federal funding to provide homes for people living with AIDS.
Antonio Davis, an ACT UP Philly member, spoke at the demonstration in front of City Hall. "I just became homeless… and I feel worse than ever", he said to the crowd of supporters. Antonio is now living in a city shelter, where he is not allowed to take his AIDS medicines because of shelter drug policies. For Antonio and many people living with HIV/ AIDS like him, the shelter system is not only inadequate housing, but a dangerous health situations.
Mayor Nutter has previously stated support for people living with HIV/ AIDS in the city. ACT UP and Proyecto Sol are calling on the Mayor to make due on that commitment by ending the waiting list for housing and funding the creation of homes for the 8,000 people across the city living with AIDS while homeless.

I applaud ACT-UP
But why segregate the HIV/AIDS community. There are countless homeless people that are mentally and physically vulnerable in the city this holiday season and no one should be homeless for the holidays. EVERYONE DESERVES A HOME
