Open Letter To West Philly

By A Concerned Relation

I got a email invite last week for the offices of the State representative network. I stopped by and slide down to Clark park as well, here is some thoughts.

So, now that the brew pub is open at 50th and baltimore it had occured to me that maybe now was the right time to write this letter. When you go and sit around all day outside the satellite coffee shop, do you ever think about your role in gentrification? I cannot help but ask this question because sometimes I pass by and I see what to my eye looks like a white settler occupation beachhead down there across from cedar park, with an increasing number of white homeowners within a one block radius and perhaps more disturbingly, Penn students/employees buying houses up to 52nd street with school subsidies.

I remember a time not that long ago when it seemed like there was a conversation going on in West Philly about gentrification and how to organize against what was about to go down... and then people seemed to stop being engaged, maybe they got busy or something. Well, while you were having fun and going to dance parties, guess what happened?

THERES A BREW PUB AT 50th and Baltimore, and a YOGA STUDIO and a COFFEE SHOP. HELLO.

Now I am not one to argue that everything is black and white and that those things plus a bunch of white folks moving into a neighborhood simply equals gentrification, but in this case its really hard to see it as anything else. I suppose partly because nobody seems to give a shit and ya'll are going on with your hipster lifestyles. I mean christ, the brew pub is open and nobody broke the fucking windows yet. It was bad enough when trader joes got a compactor and nobody sabotaged it. IS THIS WEST PHILLY OR WHAT? Aren't ya'll supposed to be anarchists or something? If shit gets to a certain point don't you need to take direct action if you failed to engage in the process that could have stopped it? A bunch of you are white homeowners, you could have been at the neighborhood meetings, you could have stopped that shit. And what's with letting these snot-nosed hipster fucks move into the neighborhood so they can look cool? Are you really just going to accept this manifest destiny bullshit or are you going to take responsibility for where you live and for what you have helped happen.

Silence equals consent remember? People fight and organize around gentrification in places like New York, Miami and San Francisco and win their battles against much fiercer odds. Penn is not an unstoppable juggernaught and neither are developers, ya'll just gotta get down with the neighborhood and start building some people power, have concrete demands, know where to put pressure and have an alternate plan. Organizing is not rocket science, and at a certain point white guilt builds into not doing anything and playing a part in the white agenda - don't get caught up in that shit, its just as bad as not acknowledging your privilege in the first place, in fact its worse. Are you just turning into liberals as you get older?

Maybe if ya'll got your act together in the neighborhood we could start working on city-wide issues again, like how the cops have declared open season on black folks the past couple years, or about how they're building prisons and condos while there's homeless folks on the streets and people are hungry and there's no health care and there's no jobs. If you were a bunch of socialists you would have done something by now and there would be an organization and a program. This is a kick in the butt. Don't get so comfortable in your urban cool lifestyles, push yourselves, get back into politics and be part of organizing and action or move out - we don't need you if your just going to play your part in the developer agenda.

Damn it! When I look around the city it's happening every where, N.Liberties, Strawberry Mansion, South Philadelphia, Kensington, I mean most areas of the city. Then all across the united states of America we see the gentrification taking place.

While we focus on the violence, which is part fear and hopelessness.

...what does the rich versus poor really mean? psychologically it means you gotta pick your team.

So here's my question. I

So here's my question. I don't live in W Philly, but I'm 20something and I just moved to Philly. I want to settle in someplace in the city where I can bike/walk mostly. Bikeable to downtown. I'm looking for a place to buy, or rent for a several years. I don't make a ton of cash, but I do OK.

After 4 weeks of searching and looking at listing (rent and to buy) I find two types of places in this city.
1. Places I can't afford,
2. places where I'd be "gentrifying" if I move there.

What's that all about?

This is the situation the

This is the situation the city is in, FarMcKon, and obviously it's not your fault. Philadelphia city govt. and business leaders are determined to put Philly on a path to being a 'world class city' - but usually that doesn't include the working class. Ultimately you have to do what's best for you, but being aware of the dynamics that are going on is important, and getting involved with a movement to make sure that poor people don't get displaced out of their neighborhoods is even better.

I am interested in getting

I am interested in getting involved in anti-gentrification work. I am a young white woman who moved to Philadelphia in February. I attended the Don't Tax Me Out event in Haddington in June but haven't been able to find very much follow-up information about other meetings. Could someone call or email me? I have a lot of energy for this kind of work and strongly believe it's my responsibility as a transplant into Philly to support anti-gentrification/displacement struggles..

I see the fascist owners of this blog have chosen to censor my reply. Congrats! The right to free speech only applies when you are in total agreement with those in charge. I shouldn’t be surprised. The tactics used (propaganda, lies, smears, bigotry) here are very underhanded on every level, why shouldn’t I expect censorhip too.

Remember, a fascist is what a fascist does. Go on with your hateful delusions.

I think you should check out

I think you should check out the 'about section' of this blog to find out what its purpose is. the people and voices represented here are not ' in charge' in fact, we are subject to what is happening in the city. and no it is not appropriate for you to say the things about black people and poor people that you said. sorry.

Super Chief, Thanks for

Super Chief,

Thanks for pointing out the 'about section' of this blog. It's really great. It seems like this is one of the only places online that is really talking about what's happening in this city.

Thanks again.

Yeah, it reads like the

Yeah, it reads like the Communist Manifesto.

Again, to the author of the screed posted above; why are you openly advocating property damage? Are you afraid of white women doing yoga and sipping lattes, tough guy? If you have to resort to violent tactics and foul language, you are on the wrong side of history, my friend. Free market economies are emerging throughout the world and your intolerant brand of socialism is dying.

Get real.

im just finding out about

im just finding out about this site and im so glad i did. there is a war on the poor i know how hard it is to exist on not enough money and try to pay for all the things you need for yourself and your family when you are under the gun and everybody is expecting you to do wrong, or calling you a 'loser' and 'immoral' and im glad to know that not everybody is as ignorant and hateful as some of the people leaving comments here. we are always the ones who get talked about, reported about, blogged about, now the tables have turned but we cant lose sight of the big picture people arguing doesnt help if you read the newsletter you will understand that its not about individuals these are plans that are in the works at the highest levels we just play different roles in them some of us are aware of our role some are not the way we choose to play is the most important

No offense, but the "Open

No offense, but the "Open Letter to West Philly" sounds a little psychotic. Was it supposed to be a joke?

nope, there are real scary

nope, there are real scary people out there who like to act like they are on the right side of the law and every one else in the world is secretely planning a takeover.

go through and replace white with black. when apropriate replace things like hipster with gangsta.

hmmm...

i would like to add that the developers are mot the ones raising rents and selling there houses for more money. people cant pin the tail on this donkey so they have to say "white" and gentrification". the displacement is caused by those in the neighborhood. they are the ones selling the houses and they are the ones raising the rents. some are new and some are old. some are investers and some are not. some are white and some are black. as much as it might be hard for you to believe Concerned Relation, there are black gentrifiers too. see, when you are ignorant you only see with narrow eyes. your deep hatred for whites shines when you start to see them moving into your neighborhood. its the same thing that happened when blacks moved into white neighborhoods. the ignorant at the time fled and those who feelt peacefull with there new black residents stayed and enjoyed there new neighbors. you my friend will most definately leave. for good riddens, who want s to live next to someone who does not like the color of your skin.

i'm deeply saddened by this

i'm deeply saddened by this statement. you should really do some reading into the history of white flight and the development of black inner cities from the 50's onward. "those who felt peaceful with their new black residents stayed and enjoyed their new neighbors". please, do some reading. talk to older people. that's the point, whites didn't stay, which precipitated one of the longest rounds of disinvestment and deterioration that we are just now starting to come out of. only this time, the people moving in are in a very different position - they're not 'bringing down' the neighborhood, they're 'bringing up' the neighborhood - same oppression, different situation. please, humble yourself and remember that the world didn't start the day you were born.

check out

check out www.blackbottom.org, for some of the history surrounding what has happened to certain communities in W. Philly

third that. history is always

third that. history is always true and you should never have your own opinion. it is so easy to be self ritious when you are annonimous. why not instead of beeing oppressive yourself, why dont you inlighten my ignorance and school me. i am not here to fight with you. history did start for me when i was born. i have talked with many people.

please, you want a battle dont come to me. your words are just as

http://cml.upenn.edu/redlining/

i would like to add that way before there where other cultures that survived in north philly, imigrants. cultural displacement itself is not owned by the black community. you need to realize that.

at one time the jews made there home in north philly and before the that the german imigrants.

by the way, black bottom is a

by the way, black bottom is a real neutral website that is completely unbiased.

see, what i keep hearing from those opposed to gentrification does not stand up to what people say on the street. i just had a discussion on 29th street with a couple that have been there 35-years. they where saying that 10 years ago they would have never sat on their steps and sip. ever sense 4 years ago it has been getting better. she pointed out the bullet hole in her front window from a shootout last year. she says that she likes the change and hopes that it continues.

know your history, why dont you humble me with your all knowing intelligence. before i moved to philly i knew nothing of this issue. i have been learning this from the people around me. i myself have been thrown into this issue by the color of my skin.

At the time when the Black

At the time when the Black Bottom was being clearned out, the people fighting it were badmouthed and attacked just like the way you attack Al and others now. Hindsight is a mutha.

it is unfair and manipulative

it is unfair and manipulative to say that in 40 years nothing has changed. btw. i would never have had a problem with al if he didnt personally attack me and others. instead of drawing a line in the dirt, try to make things happen. this goes for al too. this is not a war. there are issues that occurring in our neighborhood. pissing on everything will only arouse hate. i have been reading around here and looking up other associated websites. i have found that the issues that are brought up are very one sided. they very rarely give the whole story. i tried to follow some of the stories and i cant do my own research to give my own opinion. al is really good at feeding people things. the story about what looked like the 1600 blk of 30th st was based on al and the neighbors

"the neighbors have told us that these homes where in good enough condition to renovate. and when we came by when the city had already started demolishing, you could see the structures where basically sound and the city could have renovated these homes. "

al is not a structural engineer. his wording is manipulative and to the right people he would sound like he knows what he is talking about. a building falling down is a building falling down. the city has engineers to asses this. it would be nice to see if what the address of the properties was to see what the city had said about them. it all sounds great and in the favor of this website when you look at it this way but there is always another side of the coin. i personally cant make a judgment on most of the issues cause i dont know both sides. i feel bad for those where their properties have been taken away.

@onion/anyone: I'm currently

@onion/anyone:

I'm currently writing an article about the gentrification of West Philly and I'd be interested in talking to you for it. The piece could really benefit from the levity of a West Philly resident who doesn't parrot the gentrification-is-just-urban-renewal line. If you (or anyone, really) are interested in speaking to me, just shoot me an email at streetfeatures@gmail.com so we can set up a time to meet/chat over the phone.

STAGES OF GENTRIFICATION: 1.

STAGES OF GENTRIFICATION:

1. WHITE anarchists and punks move into a neighborhood where rent is very very cheep. They have good reasons for doing this: they don't have to work for the man all day & can spend there time organizing, making zines, and doing worthwhile and politically well intentioned work in the community. They can also potentially give the finger to their white privilege and prove to themselves and to their immediate neighbors that they are not racists. The only group of people that they hate based on external appearance are HIPSTERS.

2. Hearing that there's a lot of exciting organizing, activism and a good queer punk community in a neigborhood, more white folks of that persuasion join them.

3. Then some more.

4. Oh and here come some more.

5. They start an organic food co-op. Co-ops are awesome. They are also expensive and attract lots of white folks. Very few/none of the long-time locals shop there.

6. Over time, slightly less hard-core radicals start to move in, encouraged by the the community they see there. Some of these folks might even be called "Hipsters". A hipster is someone who is less punk than you, and for that reason who have to hate them. They probably like art. They might be doing more actual political work than very concerned punk kid next door who plays his guitar all day, but where would we be if we didn't build ourselves up by putting eachother down? (The revolution will not be inclusive, you can bet your ass.)

7. Here is the worst part. The hipsters wouldn't even be there if the punks didn't move there first, creating a scene that was comfortable and familiar to them. The reason Penn kids are spreading out is because the neighborhood has become more white. The penn kids are very clever. They can tell that you are white even though you disguise yourself in used clothing and ride a bike. Even if your face is dirty and you are an activist, Penn students and developers can tell that you are white. Sometimes talking shit about hipsters and white boys makes you a little less white, but only for a second. The second the words "fucking snot nosed hipsters" pass your lips, you become white again, and the inquirer can take pictures of you, and your landlord can raise your rent. Because you like bikes, a bike shop opens in your neighborhood and white kids go there. That raises the value of the property around it, and an acupuncture studio, coffee shop and brew pub move in too. The neighborhood has started to look "better" to developers.

HOW TO STOP GENTRIFICATION:

1. End capitalism
2. Never move.

*This is not to encourage the throwing up of hands and submission to the inevitable. Steps can be taken to slow the process, fight for tenant rights and build strong communities that talk to each other and fight injustice where they see it. But the process needs to be understood not as the FAULT of one social group as opposed to another, but as an economic reality that results from some people having more capital (which includes a college education, king's english, fair skin and a mom in the suburbs) than others. Hatred, finger pointing and more-punk-than-thou attitudes will accomplish nothing, and only serve to alienate potential allies. We need to fight the cause, Capitalism, and not the symptom (hipsters). You may have great intentions, but people aren't gonna start working with you if they think you're a jerk.
